In 1852, construction started, and the lighthouse was commissioned in 1853. After the lighthouse was built, many problems were encountered. Shifting sands caused the point to be extended by nearly a mile. The original light was a 5th Order Fresnel lens, later upgraded when the building was replaced. Undated USCG image.

Mission Point Light is a lighthouse located in the U.S. state of Michigan at the end of Old Mission Point, a peninsula jutting into Grand Traverse Bay 17 miles (27 km) north of Traverse City. When it was built in 1870, it was an exact copy of the Mama Juda Light [2] (now destroyed), which was built on the Detroit River in 1866.
Description. The Grand Marais Harbor Inner and Outer lights area pair of lighthouses located on the Grand Marais pier, 2,610 feet (800 m) apart. [ 10] Both are prefabricated skeletal iron or steel structures painted white and bolted to the pier. [ 6] The outer light is 34 feet (10 m) tall and the inner light is 55 feet (17 m) tall.
