History. When West Ouachita High School opened in the fall of 1989, it was an ultra-modern facility designed around a courtyard and amphitheater. Architects capitalized on the thirty-six acre sloping site to construct a multi-leveled building with 121,000 square feet (11,200 m 2) of heated area. The total cost amounted to eight million dollars.

In 1838, Caddo Parish was created from Natchitoches, as were Madison and Caldwell parishes in the east. In 1839, Union Parish was formed from Ouachita, and Calcasieu was formed from St. Landry in 1840. Five parishes were created in 1843: Bossier, DeSoto, Franklin, Sabine, and Tensas.
