The National Institute of Education (NIE), Sri Lanka, based in Maharagama, was established in 1986 under the provisions of the National Institute of Education Act No. 28 of 1985. The aim of the institute is to "provide leadership for the development of general education with quality, equity and relevance in a pluralistic society".
At the same time the Ceylon College of Technology at Katubedda became the fifth campus of the university. Jaffna became the sixth campus of the university on 25 July 1974. The Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 radically altered university education in Sri Lanka.
University of Sri Lanka. The University of Sri Lanka was a public university in Sri Lanka. Established in 1972 by amalgamating the four existing universities, it was the only university in Sri Lanka from 1972 until 1978. The university was based at six campuses in Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and Jaffna.
As an immediate relief, under the provisions of section 24A of the university act No. 16 of 1978 as amended by Act No. 07 of 1985, the South Eastern University College was established for the displaced students and academic staff from the Eastern University by an order through gazette no. 88/9 published on 26 July 1995.
