I always thought it was AT&T, but I hear Cingular owns it. I don't believe that, because I thought it was the other way around - AT&T owns Cingular. Is there more than one owner, as is the case with Verizon Wireless, which is owned by Verizon & Vodafone?
This discussion is of wireless phones, not land lines. AT&T (the former Southwestern Bell Corporation) owns AT&T long distance. Verizon was formed when Bell Atlantic, having previously swallowed NYNEX, merged with GTE. It subsequently swallowed AT&T Long Lines's largest competitor, MCI (previously known as Worldcom).
Oct 16, 2011. 61. 2. Feb 9, 2016. #1. I'm thinking about getting an iPhone 6S from an individual that is locked to AT&T. There is no money owed on the phone. I'm on Cricket now and despite the fact that AT&T owns and runs Cricket on their network I'm reading conflicting stories. Some say it still has to be unlocked.
USA. Sep 9, 2022. #1. I don't understand why AT&T gets to charge $35 for me to upgrade my iPhone when purchased directly from Apple. It's aggravating since AT&T's computer will do the "upgrade" with me doing all the work. It's just a hidden fee for AT&T to get more revenue. Perhaps we should all show up at an AT&T store to get our new iPhones ...

Many American consumers are oblivious to it because in comparison to other markets few per capita even have passports and may not understand the late sim tray deficit.
Simple. Buy a new $600 phone instead of a $1000 phone. Or buy a used current model phone which will be less. An iPhone Pro 15 Max is $1399 new, $1045 used on eBay for example. Buy a cheap cell phone plan without all the terms, conditions, and other stuff associated with most postpaid plans.
That automatic $25/month AT&T IMEI penalty applies to any phone (no matter who owns or bought the phone or how it was purchased) as long as that phone is 'connected' to the AT&T network & if the IMEI number of that phone is on the arbitrary AT&T $25/month IMEI-penalty list

You still can change to T-mobile, if you payoff the balance. When you select a phone with a payment plan, it will be locked to that carrier until the phone is paid off.
So I was going to put my receipt for my iPhone 5S into the box (something I always do so I know where it is) and I happened to look at my receipt for the first time. To my surprise, I noticed several AT&T services on the receipt that I did not ask for. I actually told the sales rep on more than...
I later realized that AT&T was offering a $1,000 credit for the iPhone 12, which was a significant change compared to previous years. I visited my local AT&T store to inquire about modifying my trade-in from the 14PM to the 12. Eventually, I canceled the 14PM trade-in and waited for my son's iPhone 12 to arrive as presented above.
