Hi all, Just thought Id share the steps I took to restore a dealer tag that I came across. This was the original dealer for my car, so I am excited to have it.
My '58 Baja Bug back in 1981. Same basic rear bumper as you have. The license plate is bolted to an aluminum sheet. So is the license plate light. Common light at auto parts stores. The aluminum sheet is mounted to the bumper with "Adel" insulated 'P' clamps. Look close to the pic. You can see the orange silicon rubber on the clamps.
Mounting the rear license plate up under the “pull tab” and flat against the inspection door can help prevent the license plate from marring the top of the bumper. No modifications needed._________________“Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I am not quite all there myself.”.
Just thought I'd fix this light while I'm running wires, I'm hooking up the tach and oil guages now. Looking at the diagram, the wire runs up front to the fuse box, fuse #8. License light typically gets its power from the right tail light. At a connector behind the tar board on the right side of the engine compartment.

My 74 had no license plate lights connected. Just two wires hanging from the socket. Removed the tarboard on the passenger side, and the connector that goes to the right tail light had an open connector. Made a wire with terminal, plugged it in, plugged the other license plate wire to ground. Done.
Posted: Sun Jul 23, 2017 1:06 pm Post subject: Re: 1970 Wiring for the License Plate light . Two black wires at the firewall could be the backup light wires, tag light should be a grey/red coming from right side tail light and a brown ground wire that plugs in behind the tar board.
The reason to this is that due to the turbulence and before menthioned vacum behind the car, a percentage of the hot air escaping from under the apron/exhaust gets drawn in and used again. The solution with vents behind the licence plate is appently juuust so far away from the apron that it sucks "clean" air.
