Split from this thread. I found out how to scan my USB devices: Under SETTINGS, click on WINDOWS DEFENDER, then click on OPEN WINDOWS DEFENDER, and select CUSTOM scan (you'll see it listed under Quick and Full), then press SCAN. A pop-up will show the drives available for scanning. Check the boxes next to the USB devices you want scanned.

Search for and open Schedule tasks. In the left-hand menu, open the Task Scheduler Library, then select Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender. Double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan. Select the Triggers panel and then select New. Now choose when you want to scan and how frequently.
In reply to tdehan's post on October 17, 2022. Hi tdehan, Applying the defender-policies-remove.reg and rebooting should fix the issue. Ref: section "Virus and Threat Protection missing?" in the Windows Defender Policies article.
Try installing a 3rd party free antivirus like Malwarebytes and then go to Settings > Windows Security to make sure Malwarebytes have replaced Windows Defender. After confirming, try to remove / uninstall Malwarebytes and check if Windows Defender has reset.
