You can tell the buyer to refuse the package when it arrives and it will be return to sender at no charges to you if it is domestic within USA. When the tracking shows the package is being return to sender, you can refund the buyer.
I just found out, while trying to find an incoming package from Seattle, WA, USPS will accept requests to find the package as soon as 5 days from date it was actually shipped for first class and priority mail. Doesn't meant anything will happen, but it might help sometimes.

Orders returned by USPS. 01-13-2021 09:25 AM. I am in the process of cleaning my workshop and I have a couple orders that have been returned to me by USPS for various reasons. I have reached out to each customer (at least twice) when the order was returned to me to see how they want to proceed. In each case, I never heard back from the customer.
Especially when USPS sends my refund to Pitney Bowes, then I get to figure out how to get Pitney Bowes to send the money to Etsy who finally sends it to me. Frustrating to say the least. Hopefully they have improved this process since my last adjustment and Pitney Bowes will automatically send the money to Etsy.
It combines all the tracking codes to one scan. They scan that code and all the tracking numbers are scanned as "accepted" ( or lately "acceptance pending until it clears the first hub) but my PO guy said acceptance pending means accepted ( probably until they lose one before it gets scanned accepted).
USPS rates went up on Oct 3rd. Priority flat rate boxes and envelopes all went up $0.75. All 1st class commercial and retail went up $0.30. $7.40 WAS the discounted rate, add $0.75 and NOW $8.15 is the discounted rate. The retail rate on the 9"x12" PM flat rate envelope is $8.70. USPS First Class mail can be shipped in boxes or bags. Judging by your items, bags would probably guarantee they would be crushed in shipping. You need to provide these and pack and buy online labels in order to schedule a pickup. You need to make sure your packages are packaged correctly or you or your buyer could be charged extra fees.
01-25-202204:12 PM. Your explanation might be correct, but my customer wants to return a heavy set of stone bookends that ship beautifully in a medium flat rate box (15 lbs.) The charge to ship it originally was around $14 for med flat rate. The return label is coming up around $23!
