My 5 y.o. was all excited about visiting the American Girl doll store which opened earlier in the year. None of us had been there before but a close friend often takes his daughter on weekend trips to New York to the store there. I am impressed with the variety and quality of the toys offered, but OMG(!) on the prices! For dolls! For children!

Galleria is a mid-tier tourist mall, not a luxury destination. And it would take a hell of a lot of work to entice the 15+ luxury brands to relocate there as tenants in order to win Neiman’s (or get Saks back). Galleria is productive financially but it’s being driven by American Girl Doll Store, Zara, Old Navy, (I assume) the new Apple.

Interesting thread for sure. I'm 39 and grew up in New Albany so my main memories are of Green Tree Mall but I do recall going to a hobby store called Wicklow's on the outer loop east of Jefferson Mall back in 1988 or 1989.

Frankly this was a great place. I was not familiar with the other Van Leunens operations, but the Mason store had to be a premier location for them. The north end was a grocery store, definitely competitive with the current local competition - Thriftway. The center section was more a department store setup, clothing and general mechandise.

Downtown Stamford had Greenbergs clothing store, CO Millers, and there was an Italian Deli also right on Atlantic Street. Plus old tenament houses where all the corporate buildings are.

The Grand Isle store (I think there was only one) I remember buying toy boats there made out of this stuff called "plastic." Five and Dime. The early version of dollar stores. The store had 10 cent slingshots and pot metal toy soldiers, water rockets, cap guns, and all sorts of cool stuff in little bins. Vincent's Pharmacy.

The wrecking ball had been painted bright pink and there was a big banner hanging on the side of the old girl saying " Take it down,Take it all down!". I can remember my male friends in high school sneaking in and bragging about it later. That is a great story about the doll hospital! Regards, Mary
