While categorizations and diagnostic criteria remained largely unchanged, a few subtypes were added or removed. Additionally, ICD-9-CM codes updated since the release of DSM-IV were incorporated. Both the DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR encompass a total of 297 mental disorders.
The criteria below are based on the formal DSM-5 criteria for a major depressive episode.
