  2. poisons - Is it safe to grow food plants near the road? -...

    gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/15

I wouldn't be that concerned about exhaust with the road being 20+ feet away, but that's me (and this isn't professional advice). However, you could always put a giant hedge close to the road to stop much of the pollution from getting into your yard, if it turns out to be a problem. Edit: Michael's answer reminded me of the mosquito trucks.

  3. Thujas like a fair amount of "food" to jump start them after xfer/transplant. Purchase some sort of evergreen fertilizer product ("M Roots" is one name brand) that has a mycorrhiza element within it as these are the fungi that help with the nutrient transfer for a healthy plant.

  4. Can you recommend any short, large-seeded sunflowers?

    gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/34237/can-you...

I'm wanting to grow a lot more sunflowers (Helianthus) for food, these days, but one of my concerns is they get really tall, and sometimes I like shorter plants. If you know of any sunflowers just like the giant ones (e.g. Mammoth Gray Striped , Mongolian Giant , and Black Russian ), except with shorter, stockier stems (I'm thinking maybe one ...

  5. What is the best way to compost a large pile of leaves with...

    gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/29932

If you have a lawnmower (that isn't a reel mower), you have a way to chop them up. Rake them into a row and mow over the row - presumably you don't have a bagging mower or you'd also have them bagged at that point, but you will have a row of shredded leaves a bit to one side of the original row of unshredded leaves.

A paste won't work well, if at all. For the mycelium to fully colonize the substrate there needs to be gas exchange throughout. Also, S. rugosoannulata needs cellulose (wood) as a food source. Complex sugars (carbohydrates) & simple sugars (table sugar, honey, etc.) can be used for growing agar & liquid cultures from tissue or spores.

  7. compost - Can kitchen waste be used as manure? - Gardening ...

    gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/1900/can-kitchen...

The food waste is not degraded and bacteria/bugs in soil will try to degraded some while releasing bad smell. Also it doesn't look good and require a long time to degrade too. I should warn you, there will be plenty of bugs if you just dump the food to the soil.

  8. @Stephie I was just thinking of cheap food sources that might have valuable nutrients. It came down to potatoes and onions. I ruled out potatoes since they absorb more pesticides and herbicides than onions, I've heard. And potatoes might spread more diseases to tomatoes and peppers. I'm still thinking about giant squash, though.

  9. I set up a 7 cu ft rolling composter in my garden about 3 weeks ago and filled it about halfway with 1/3 food scraps and 2/3 cardboard/leaves/finished compost. My kids added more food scraps, so it's probably 50-50 now. I've kept it wet and turned it, but upon opening it yesterday, it had a sour stench and a lot of bugs squirming in it.

  10. pest control - How to rid a colony of ants from my yard -...

    gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/60814/how-to-rid-a...

Don't try to kill the ants by spraying them directly. Figure out where they travel to and from their nest(s). They usually create pheromone trails and follow the same routes between the nest and good food sources. If you spray the ground where they walk, they will carry the poison back inside the nest on their feet. –

    gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/4441

I just bought a home in the CA bay area. My front yard is dominated by a large redwood tree that seems in good health. I really love the way it looks. By large I mean 5-6 stories in height, plan...
