Mountain zebra. The mountain zebra ( Equus zebra) is a zebra species in the family Equidae, native to southwestern Africa. There are two subspecies, the Cape mountain zebra ( E. z. zebra) found in South Africa and Hartmann's mountain zebra ( E. z. hartmannae) found in south-western Angola and Namibia.
Cape mountain zebra. The Cape mountain zebra ( Equus zebra zebra) is a nominate subspecies of mountain zebra that occurs in certain mountainous regions of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa . It is the smallest of all existing zebra species and also the most geographically restricted.
The plains zebra ( Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchellii) is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra. Its range is fragmented, but spans much of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. Six or seven subspecies have been recognised, including the extinct quagga which was thought to be a separate species.
Grant’s zebra at Safari Wilderness in Lakeland, Florida. This northern subspecies is vertically striped in front, horizontally on the back legs, and diagonally on the rump and hind flanks. Shadow stripes are absent or only poorly expressed. The stripes, as well as the inner spaces, are broad and well defined. Northerly specimens may lack a mane.
