The ship's keel was laid in Newport News, Virginia on 22 August 2015. As part of the traditional keel laying ceremony, the initials of ship sponsor Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President Kennedy and the sponsor of the previous John F. Kennedy, were welded into the ship's hull. As of late June 2017 the ship was 50% structurally complete.
1881–1896: tiny farming village becomes a new city. Newport News was merely an area of farm lands and a fishing village until the coming of the railroad and the subsequent establishment of the great shipyard. As a 16-year-old in 1837, Collis P. Huntington had visited the rural village known as Newport News Point.
The contract to build Spadefish was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia, on 9 March 1965 and her keel was laid down there on 21 December 1966. She was launched on 15 May 1968, sponsored by Mrs. Charles T. Booth, and commissioned on 14 August 1969.
