The Military Service Act, 1917 ( French: Loi concernant le Service militaire) [ 1] was an Act passed by the Parliament of Canada which introduced conscription in the midst of the First World War. [ 2] It was passed due to a shortage of volunteers and was an effort to conscript more soldiers .

However, conscription into a full-time military service had only been instituted twice by the government of Canada, during both world wars .
A form of compulsory military service was established in the Canadas during the 19th century, instituted in Lower Canada in 1803 and Upper Canada in 1808.
