The Circuit Court of Cook County is the largest of the 24 circuit courts ( trial courts of original and general jurisdiction) in the judiciary of Illinois as well as one of the largest unified court systems in the United States – second only in size to the Superior Court of Los Angeles County since that court merged with other courts in 1998.

Office description. Richard Jones Hamilton, First Circuit Court Clerk of Cook County, 1831–1841. On January 1, 1964, the circuit courts of Cook County were unified. [1] Before this, there were more than 200 separate courts in Cook County. [1] In its unified form, it now had a single, popularly elected, clerk of court.
The clerk is a citywide elected office, and is one of three city-wide elected officials in the City of Chicago, along with the Mayor and the Treasurer. The current city clerk is Anna Valencia. One former city clerk is more famous for his non-political activities: The late Baseball Hall of Famer Cap Anson served one term from 1905-1907.
