Mary Stevenson Cassatt ( / kəˈsæt /; May 22, 1844 – June 14, 1926) [1] was an American painter and printmaker. [2] She was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh 's North Side), and lived much of her adult life in France, where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists.
Description and interpretation. The work depicts a mother engaged in the act of sewing while seated in front of a window. A young child in a white dress leans on her mother's lap while gazing out of the picture plane toward the viewer. The woman wears a striped dress covered by a green apron that mirrors the greens in the grass outside the window.
Accession. 1963.10.98. Woman with a Sunflower is a 1905 oil painting by the American artist Mary Cassatt. It has been in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC since 1963.
