For discussion, what is the community recommendation for NAS software, preferably free, for home use? There is none as your request is incomplete. You are asking for community recommendation for (preferred free) NAS software but you didn’t mention for which hardware that you already have. At least I couldn’t find it in your request.
I would like to get recommendations on the best software NAS to try preferably free! Is it just an operating system that you setp on a normal desktop computer with many RAID Disks? How does it work and what is the best and easiest version to setup. Thanks.
FreeNAS, or basically anything, can do AD integration, CIFS shares, share permissions, etc. But if you need folder permissions, that is NTFS so you need to consider carefully if you need NTFS or not. If you do, you need to use Windows. 1 Spice up. scottalanmiller (Scott Alan Miller) November 25, 2013, 7:17pm 5.

I have never had a problem before installing FreeNas Create usb stick ISO Boot to USB Install to whatever device you have (usb, ssd, hdd.) However this time I am using a UEFI motherboard which is the only real difference between this and all the other FreeNas builds I have done. So I guess you want to hear or see my ...
Hi Guys, is there any free data recovery software for NAS(ReadyNAS) with ext2/ext3 file system? I need to recover an accidentally modified file from NAS drive? Due to hardware issues, backup was not working. Many Thanks.
Veeam Backup Free version is sufficient for this as you can backup Incremental and a Full Bare Metal Restore Image within the same automated task over the network to NAS via a CIFS share. Restore from the NAS are easy as well with granular file recovery.
