Russell Risley Sage (August 4, 1816 – July 22, 1906) was an American financier, railroad executive and Whig politician from New York, who became one of the richest Americans of all time. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] As a frequent partner of Jay Gould in various transactions, he amassed a fortune.
These include most of Russell Sage College, one of two privately owned urban parks in New York, and two National Historic Landmarks. Visitors ranging from the Duke de la Rochefoucauld to Philip Johnson have praised aspects of it. Martin Scorsese used parts of downtown Troy as a stand-in for 19th-century Manhattan in The Age of Innocence. [4]

In 1916, Sage founded Russell Sage College in Troy, New York as a comprehensive college for women. The college is located within what has since been designated as the historic district of Troy, an area that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. RSC offers liberal arts and professional degree programs. [citation needed]
In 1949 Russell Sage College for women in Troy, NY, opened a coeducational Albany Division. Intended to serve the large number of veterans returning from World War II, state government workers, and others seeking an education related to workplace needs, the Albany Division offered associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in an evening schedule to an audience of working adults.
Through Kellas' efforts, Russell Sage became an independently chartered educational institution in 1927. Kellas retired as Dean and President of Russell Sage College in 1928 and devoted her services entirely to Emma Willard School. She retired from Emma Willard School in 1942. Kellas died in 1943 in Troy and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
