Nothing spooky, or conspiracy theory there for you. The .ru was just a domain name, I don't think they were hosted or originated in Russia. But regardless of that, their actual real domain has gone dead too, so yeah, seems they got taken down over night.
Ive been using 123movies for the better part of about 6 years. I always knew that the links and popups that cone with using the site are scams, but i never once clicked on any of them. My friend and I were having a discussion about 123movies last night and he mentioned how it was an "illegal site".

Well, the official "123Movies" was shutdown back in 2018, so anything you're finding today is just a "clone" site at best or a spam-suppository of viruses more likely. tl;dr - they're free because the stream isn't the product. You (the user) are the product, and you're being sold to third-party advertisers and data-thieves.
