In the 1930s, a limited amount of work was done on a railway line connecting Tan Ap, south of Vinh on the North–South line, to Thakhek in Laos, where tin deposits were being exploited at the time. The first 17.5 km (10.9 mi) had been constructed west of Tan Ap by 1933, but construction was eventually abandoned due to poor economic forecasts.
