Route 286 begins as Pinney Street at an intersection with Route 74 in southern Ellington. It heads north 2.6 miles (4.2 km) to the Ellington town center, passing by the residential community of Windermere Village along the way. In Ellington center, Route 286 turns east along Main Street, approaching but not intersecting Route 140 at the town green.
The first in the state touched down around 1:30 PM near New Britain, traveling along nearly the same path as a tornado in 1728 or 1729. This tornado was nearly as violent as the Wallingford Tornado of 1878.
