WHPS-CD was the Detroit area's first Black-owned TV station since WGPR (channel 62, now WWJ-TV) became a CBS affiliate. The station was owned until 2015 by R. J. Watkins, who, between 1988 and 1996, hosted and produced a dance program for WGPR-TV, The New Dance Show, which moved to WHPS-CD in 1995, and reruns still air on the station at various evening timeslots.
As of 2015, WJBK is the flagship station. The announcers are Jason Ross Jr [ 2] with play-by-play, Chris Spielman with color commentary, and Tori Petry with sideline reports. The late Fred McLeod was once a play-by-play TV broadcaster on Lions pre-season.
WJBK is the only American television station in the Detroit–Windsor television market that broadcasts its digital signal on the VHF band. Canadian station CBET-DT, broadcasting from McGregor, Ontario, is on VHF channel 9. All other Detroit–Windsor DTV stations are on the UHF band, which includes channels 14 to 36 after the FCC repack .
