The university was founded in 1925 by the first registered Filipino architect, Tomás Mapúa, a graduate of Cornell University in New York, US.

The Mapúa Institute of Technology at Laguna ( MITL) is the flagship college of the Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna. The college is under the Mapúa School of Engineering in the Philippines. MITL is among the three pioneer colleges under MCL. It offers architecture and seven engineering programs.
The Mapúa Cardinals and Lady Cardinals are the varsity sports teams of Mapúa University that play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) . The Mapúa Cardinals holds the NCAA record for the most General Championships in the seniors' division with a total of 20—the last of these championships was won in 1993.

History. The National Teachers College was founded and incorporated by Segundo M. Infantado, Sr. and Flora Amoranto Ylagan on September 29, 1928. In accordance with Act No. 1459 as amended, the National Teachers College was authorized by the Department of Public Instruction on April 17, 1929, to operate as an educational institution.
