The district operates a total of 180 schools: 109 elementary, 34 middle, 23 high, 14 alternative, adult and community, intermediate, and Exceptional Student Education (ESE). It has 27,168 employees and 45,000 volunteers. Established in 1909, the district was known as the Palm Beach County Board of Public Instruction until the mid-1980s.
The school opened as Forest Hill High School in 1959; [4] it is situated next to the West Palm Beach Country Club and I-95 in the southwestern corner of the City of West Palm Beach on a compact 17.38-acre (70,300 m 2) tract. A larger building replaced the original structure on the same site in 2004. The school was first accredited in 1961.
The district is operated by an independently elected School Board. A professional Superintendent of Schools appointed by the School Board manages the district's day-to-day operations. As of 2014, the Miami-Dade County Public School District is the fourth-largest public school district in the nation with almost 360,000 students. [134]
