The Phi Beta Kappa key is a widely-recognized badge of academic honor. The present standard key, except for its smaller size and for the lower stem added by the branch at Yale, is substantially the same as the original medal of the Alpha of Virginia.
Phi Beta Kappa keys are made to the standards specified by the Society and are available in three different sizes. Each is available in either 10 karat solid gold or 24 karat gold electroplate. Each of the three key sizes is available as a key pin.

The Phi Beta Kappa Key is the symbol of the Society. Made in the early 19th century as a square silver shield, the key evolved into a rectangular gold key with a stem (the stem was originally used for winding watches but no longer serves that purpose).
