El Portal ( Spanish for "The Gateway") is a census-designated place [4] in Mariposa County, California, United States. [2] It is located 11.5 miles (19 km) west-southwest of Yosemite Village, [5] at an elevation of 1,939 feet (591 m). [2] The population was 372 at the 2020 census, [3] down from 474 at the 2010 census.
The Yosemite Village Historic District encompasses the primary built-up section of the Yosemite Valley as it was developed by the National Park Service for Yosemite National Park. The district includes visitor services areas, park personnel residences and administrative facilities. It is located to the north of the Merced River.
In 1916, the National Park Service granted a 20-year concession to the Desmond Park Service Company. It bought out or built hotels, stores, camps, a dairy, a garage, and other park facilities. The Hotel Del Portal was completed in 1908 by a subsidiary of the Yosemite Valley Railroad. It was located at El Portal, California just outside of Yosemite.
