Shades of pink. The color or name comes from the French word cerise, meaning "cherry". According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded use of cerise as a color name in English was in The Times of November 30, 1858. In computing, on the X Window System, X11 color names are represented in a simple text file, which maps certain strings to RGB color values.
