Erich Von Manstein: Overrated or one of the best of World War 2? I often I hear a lot of great things about Manstein. His "Sickle Cut" during the Battle of France was brilliant (even if the Allied planners had many problems with command in France), the 3rd Battle of Kharkov was brilliantly fought battle, and Kursk is often called his 'Lost ...

Erich Von Manstein placed down his glass of wine and sauntered towards the door. “Come in.”. The door opened with a slight creak, and inside came Erwin Rommel. The two men had become close friends after the war, and they embraced each other. More often than not, Erich would come over to Rommel’s manor, but Rommel said on the phone that ...

Generalfeldmarschall Erich von Manstein was certainly one of the most competent and respected military commanders that commanded the various forces of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War, but there were times when he also faltered in operational planning and battlefield execution. Manstein undoubtedly had the necessary connections and talent to be visible enough to serve as the chief of staff to an Army Group during the Polish campaign. As far as his personal achievements are concerned, this is what I know: • he proposed to install a 7.5cm light infantry gun on a PzIII chassis, now famously known as the Stug.

Erich von Manstein. Huh. The guy got to write his own mythos. Well, would you look at that. So, while it is quite well known that Manstein took up an informal advisory spot for the purposes of NATO - and was the only former field marshal to do so -, it seems to be not clear at all what he actually did for NATO. NATO strategy in the Cold War was ...

As for Manstein, he was likely the mind behind the Ardennes plan for the invasion of France, and in the war of the Eastern front he became the definitive marshal upon which Hitler relied, showing great potential in the strategic level of warfare. In the end, Germany had some of the best military minds of the war, and Manstein was arguably one ...

Like almost all the German generals, he wanted to deflect the blame for the loss of the war on those evil incompetent Nazis. So it very much absolves the German military for making any bad decisions, and basically blames Hitler et al. for everything. No contemporary history agrees with this verdict.
