Swansea University was founded in 1920 as the fourth college of the University of Wales. Established in 1993 as the College of Law and Criminology, the School is the largest Law School in Wales [citation needed] and ranks third in the UK for Criminology, and twenty-second in the UK for Law according to the Times.
A fourth college, Swansea (now Swansea University), was added in 1920 and in 1931 the Welsh National School of Medicine was incorporated. In 1967, the Welsh College of Advanced Technology entered the federal university as the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST), also in Cardiff.
The Grove lecture theatre is named for Sir William Grove (1811–1896) which was dedicated on 21 August 1990 by Lord Callaghan and the Purnell lecture theatre for Prof Howard Purnell (1925–1996) which was dedicated on 10 May 1996 by Sir John Cadogan.
