I was recently approved for the Discover It student cash back card. I've tried to look around what happens once you graduate from college, but haven't really been able to find a firm answer. I have seen some people say that once your estimated graduation date occurs, the one you put when applying, they just auto convert the card to a regular card.
For young/thin files they are good starter cards to begin with. In any case if those are out of contention then other options could be Capital One's Quicksilver cards or secured cards like the ones Bank of America, US Bank and Capital One if you want themt to start their own credit history. I see Discover and others offer a student credit cards. I hear some are easy to get. Out of 100 times, how many issuers ask for some form of ID of a student? Because some of the students can be part time. Or a online course.
My credit card history prior to submitting the application is basically this. Local Credit Union: Individual, $250 limit, opened in 09/2013. $245 balance. CareCredit: Individual, $1500 limit, opened in 04/2014. No balance. Discover: Authorized User, $15,000 limit, opened in 07/1996.
In my humble opinion, I would apply for a Capital One Platinum card. If they turn you down, then I would use the money Discover refunded you and apply for a secured Captial One Card. Capital One is a great starter card, however, you will be bucket limited, meaning you will never grow the credit line into a large amount.
That account will have a statement close date, which may be based on a specific day of the month, or based on the date the account was opened. Your first due date will be at least 23 days after that statement close date, so you'll have up to almost 2 months before a payment is due, if the 1st statement cuts a month after opening.

I've had the Discover it Student card for almost three years and have gotten several CLIs on it, and one of them was automatic! Mine has gone from $1750 to $6850. It also has all of the same rewards as the regular one, so there is no need to apply for the regular one separately.
