Microsoft did not disclose how many email accounts were breached, nor exactly what information the hackers accessed or stole. Company spokespeople did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Microsoft first disclosed the hack in January, stating that a password spray attack gained the group access to "a very small percentage of Microsoft corporate email accounts" in late 2023.
Microsoft noted in a blog post that the attack might have been prevented if the accounts in question had enabled multi-factor authentication, a defensive measure which is widely recommended in the industry, including by Microsoft itself.
