The vessel was constructed between 1950 and 1952 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia. United States was built to exacting Navy specifications, which required that the ship be heavily compartmentalized, and have separate engine rooms to optimize wartime survivability.
Newport News Shipbuilding were the builders, the only American shipbuilders with the facilities for ULCC construction. A third vessel of the class ordered by Zapata Ocean Carriers was canceled.
