Australia. The 2-8-0 locomotive was used extensively throughout Australia. It served on the 5 ft 3 in ( 1,600 mm) broad gauge, 4 ft 81⁄2 in ( 1,435 mm) standard gauge and 3 ft 6 in ( 1,067 mm) narrow gauge and was employed mostly as a freight locomotive, although it was often also employed in passenger service in Victoria.

This locomotive type is most often referred to as a Berkshire, though the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway used the name Kanawha for their 2-8-4s.
