When asked to pick a random number between 1 and 100, most people will choose a number that is odd, often prime, and approximately 1/3 or 2/3 of the way between the lower and upper limits. For some reason we think these values are "more random" than other numbers.
One guess can pick a number from 3 (is your number 2?). 2 guesses can do 7. N guesses can pick a number from 2N − 1 2 + − 1, so 6 guesses can do it for 1-127. Edit: As noted in the comments, you're supposed to have the number on or before the 6th attempt, while this only ensures you the answer by then.
37 to to our minds seems really random, if you ask people to pick a number between 1 and 10 a lot of people pick 3 or 7. 1 and 10 are at the start/end. 4, 6, and 8 are too round of numbers so they don't seem random enough. 5 is in the middle. 2 and 9 are still too close to the start/end. If the number is uniformly drawn from 1-100, you can achieve exactly 5% by picking any number from 3 to 98. If you picked randomly, you would have a 96% chance of 5%, a 2% chance of 4%, and a 2% chance of 3% = .96*.05+.02*.04+.02*.03 = 4.94%. My thinking is that the chance might be greater than 5%, since the numbers 1, 2, 99, and 100, don't ...

Pick a number between 0 and 100. The best entry will be the one which is closest to 2/3 of the average of all entries. For example, assume that the average is 60. The best entry would therefore be 40. Be sure to submit your answer in the link above. The point is that you don't see other submissions. Good luck! I'll let you know the result soon.
