Domingo de Guzmán (St. Dominic) was born in Spain in 1170. There are many legends about his life, but perhaps one of the most popular describes a prophecy given to his mother in a dream before he was born.
Saint Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers, the Dominican Republic, and the innocent who are falsely accused of crimes. He is commonly depicted in icons with a dog, or lilies, holding a book. His hair always appears cut with a tonsure.
On 6 August 1221, only a few years after the papal approval of his Order, Dominic Guzman breathed his last in the Dominican convent in Bologna. Just thirteen years later, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope Gregory IX, who had known the great founder and preacher personally.
