Founded in 1946, it is the largest nationwide organization of black women in the United States. Members include Kamala Harris, Marian Wright Edelman, and the late Betty Shabazz .
Black women began to work for political rights in the 1830s in New York and Philadelphia. [19] Throughout the 19th century, black women like Harriet Forten Purvis, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper worked on black civil rights, like the right to vote. Black women had to fight for racial equality, as well as women's rights.
The American Women's Suffrage movement began in the north as a middle-class white woman's movement with most of their members educated white women primarily from Boston, New York, Maine, and the Northeast.
