Ken Farrell made a mount for my Mini 14 ranch that requires 3 holes to be drilled and tapped on the top of the receiver. Farrell mounts are not inexpensive, but are one of the best quality mounts made. Farrel does not advertise these. He made me one and still has the specs to make more.
181 series Mini 14 with a B-Square scope mount. I got a B-Square mount for a Mini 14 given to me. I had a Bushnell Engage 3x9x40 scope laying around so I decided to give it a try. I used blue thread locker on every screw on the mount. I got the replacement bolt lock side plate with the mount. I used a pair of channel lock pliers to tighten down ...

I researched both of them and ended up going with the Weigand because it's a little bit shorter and worked better for me both functionally and aesthetically.
just fyi, Ruger makes 30mm rings. they may be cheaper than the Warnes. my Mini 300 Blackout w/Vortex Diamondback HP 2-8x27. wanted the scope as low as possible so swapped out the medium rings that came with the rifle for factory Ruger low 1" matte rings. no contact on the scope from ejected brass. had to remove the rear sight to clear the magnification ring but i planned on leaving the rifle ...
It is ideal for a red-dot. For a scope, you would need to get either a scout scope or a pistol scope - both with long eye relief. The advantages are several: 1) it keeps the optic low so you can use a cheek weld; 2) it helps stiffen the barrel (important for your and my models), and 3) it aids in cooling.

The rail mount Ruger supplies with their Ranch Rifle Mini 14s is mounted on the receiver of the gun through the set of screws fitting the base into the receiver. Just put THAT (supplied today) bridge by Ruger on all of their Mini 14 Ranch rifles selling.

Add a scout scope or a red dot and you should be good to go. It also has the added benefit of holding that whippy barrel in place some to increase accuracy.
The issue at hand is really this... scoping a 1970's 180-series Mini-14 is sketchy at best. If I had a new ranch rifle with integrated scope mounts, I would scope it. To have any type of "solid" mount in 180 series, you need to remove the rear sight and hope and pray that the pivot-type scope mount is solid.

If anything, you want the lowest scope sighting line/plane possible with the Mini platform. That means low rings and a scope with a small diameter objective (forward) end. Ruger owner since 1986.

The first mount you mentioned the B-Square is an ok mount, however the recoil will loosen the mount after several rounds, and therefore your zero will suffer. The mount I've had the best luck with is the S&K Insta ...
