There are 3 Hoppers so far. 1st, was a Hopper 2000 the original. 2nd there was the Hopper with Sling. 3rd there is the Hopper 3. For dishes there is Dish 1000 the original 3 LNBF high definition dish then there is the 1000+ that saw 4 satellite locations.
Got tired of resetting that everyday so I upgraded to the hopper sling. Dish waved The $99 technician visit fee and Hopper Duo did not have the phone line connection so I was looking forward to connecting this Hopper sling so I could receive caller ID on my TV the technician spent two to three hours downloading all the information to the receiver.

As someone who deals with Dish installs and service calls on a daily basis I can tell you there's no rash of bad Hoppers right now and the odds of you getting two bad ones in a row is very unlikely and three bad ones in a row is, well, even more unlikely obviously.

I ordered a new hopper off ebay from a good source. New in box in plastic wrap. Also ordered a new solo node. Connected to a 1000.4 eastern arc dish and lnb. The Lnb is a new Dish network 172800 LNB. Decided I might as well replace it too. So a simple single hopper setup, no joeys, new solo node, new lnb on a 1000.4 dish.
Short and simple answer: No, you cannot use the 500. You will need a DPP LNB and a node for the Hopper. it will show warnings (third tuner will not have any feed, so only it will be two tuners run for the cases), but it will works with DP LNBF/switch - I tested the dish [D500/D1K] early days of H's appearance.
