NHS Connecting for Health. The NHS Connecting for Health (CFH) agency was part of the UK Department of Health and was formed on 1 April 2005, having replaced the former NHS Information Authority. It was part of the Department of Health Informatics Directorate, with the role to maintain and develop the NHS national IT infrastructure.
The core aim of the NPfIT was to bring the NHS’ use of information technology into the 21st century, through the introduction of integrated electronic patient records systems, online ‘choose and book’ services, computerized referral and prescription systems and underpinning network infrastructure.
In April 2002, the National Programme for IT (which in 2005 became Connecting for Health) set out with the ambitious vision of creating a paperless NHS. The programme was expected to cost £2.3 billion and was called the biggest information technology programme in the world.

Further, since 2004, over half of England’s NHS trusts have become autonomous NHS organisations (that is, foundation trusts)34 and some are now choosing to implement their own choice of electronic health record solutions independently of NHS Connecting for Health.
NHS Connecting for Health, the agency created last year to run the programme, admits that to date the programme has made little noticeable difference to clinicians and patients.
