KSHS. The Kansas Historical Society is the official state historical society of Kansas. Headquartered in Topeka, it operates as "the trustee of the state" for the purpose of maintaining the state's history and operates the Kansas Museum of History, Kansas State Archives and Library, Kansas State Capitol Tour Center, and 16 state-owned sites.
There are over 1,600 buildings, sites, districts, and objects in Kansas listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Kansas. NRHP listings appear in 101 of the state's 105 counties. This National Park Service list is complete through NPS recent listings posted August 30, 2024.[1]
History. The museum is a division of the Kansas Historical Society, which was founded in 1875 by Kansas newspaper editors and publishers. Its first home was in the Kansas State Capitol. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway #132 (which had been renumbered ATSF 2414), near the end of its service life in the 20th century, before restoration.
A specialist from the Kansas State Historical Society introduced local officials to the funding opportunities for historical restoration of downtown buildings. This was followed in 2009 by a grant that covered about 60% of the funding for building restoration. The downtown area was listed as a Kansas State Historic Site on November 20, 2010.
Talk of preservation began around 1900, and in 1907 Col. Samuel F. Woolard of Wichita began raising a restoration fund. He later became president of the Kansas Historical Society. [20] Historic restoration would be partially based on the memory of John Martin of Alabama, who had been a clerk for the first legislature. [21]

November 21, 2003. The Keen Kutter Building is a former hardware warehouse located in Wichita, Kansas, that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The four-story building has a free standing water tower that powered a water sprinkler system. The tower is an important landmark on the city's skyline.
