At MLS Cup 2004, two new expansion teams were announced to start play in 2005, Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA.
The season covers the period from November 15, 2004, through October 30, 2005. Under Piotr Nowak's tenure as head coach, this was the first and only season where he did not lead D.C.
