  2. Are there any simulators for driving through Google Maps ... -...

When I was a primary schooler, I always had a daydream while in boring classes that someday we'd map all the streets of the world out in 3D, slap it on a Gamecube disk and be able to drive through the panoramic photos as a video game. Years later, with Google Maps, we're one step closer to this.

Who made this? I've been wanting to make a game like this, but essentially just using google maps as a Virtual Tabletop for RPGs. Imagine this but you can just place figurines around on maps (3d view would be better), have a grid, and measuring tool. I thought the google maps API wasn't allowing people to use maps like this anymore!

I found this on a Google maps driving game, (seen in one of the photos) I put "SCP" as the location just to see where it would place me. I checked and this doesn't appear when you search it on normal google maps, found it though. street view goes nowhere close to it and in the closest photo sphere I can't seem to find it.

There's a problem with road signs and such though. While technology like Google Street View allows to get an approximate view on road sign position, it can't catch out everything and requires developers to add any road signs that can't be found in Google Street View. Maybe they should add the way to contribute and use the map layout from Google ...

  6. Games that use real-world map : r/pcgaming - Reddit

It commits the worst sin a racing game could: its inconsistent. Any turn or kink in the road, and you cannot know how the car will spin on you. Still, the only game I know of where if you want a particular car you have to first have room for it in your garage, find the correct dealership by exploring and then actually drive there and move ...

  7. A 1:1 scale of earth driving simulator, when and will it happen?

    www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/ok7dq4/a_11_scale_of_earth_driving_simulator...

The game doesn't have to exactly match reality, it's not a military sim or Google Earth, it just needs to look pretty. So coarse terrain and geospatial data, plus road map data, plus procedural/AI-based generation of the high detail terrain meshes and e.g. tree and building placement is how this could work.

  8. "start driving" mode on google maps : r/cars - Reddit

351 votes, 28 comments. true. Google maps does do that too, shows a little blue dot on the map. But I’ve found it’s easier if you input the destination and have it show a blue path overall of where to go or you can put it into drive mode or the feature where Google maps kinda zooms into the path and speaks directions every so often on where to turn, how much farther etc.

I looked at two options - one is what you suggested to limit users to set areas or the second was using Google's Static Image Maps API and doing pixel-picking for road detection. That seemed really promising (and easier to cache) I just haven't got round to pursuing further.

Google earth is already a 3D representation of the earth, though a very clunky one. Use the street view data and textures to fine tune and perfect the 3D model. To do this, you need to use a powerful game engine or 3D mode software. AI can solve a lot of problems with rendering this. Then you add the in game mechanics.
