Los Angeles, [a] often referred to by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in the U.S. state of California.With roughly 3.9 million residents within the city limits as of 2020, [7] Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, behind only New York City; it is also the commercial, financial and cultural center of Southern California.
Greater Los Angeles is a politically divided metropolitan area. During the 1970s and 1980s, the region leaned toward the Republican Party. Los Angeles County is one of the original counties of California, created at the time of statehood in 1850. In 1851 and 1852, Los Angeles County stretched from the coast to the state line of Nevada. [9]
The 2000 U.S. census counted 77,818 residents in the 3.51-square-mile (9.1 km 2) Hollywood neighborhood—an average of 22,193 people per square mile (8,569 people/km 2 ), the seventh- densest neighborhood in all of Los Angeles County. In 2008 the city estimated that the population had increased to 85,489.
