This perk is significant on this particular route because having to stand for all or a significant portion of your trip in coach is not uncommon. This is the Amtrak's busiest route outside the Northeast Corridor, after all.

YTD !65% have arrived on time and !87% arrived within an hour of the scheduled arrival time. That being said in the extreme cases they can be pretty bad. ~1% arrived 10+ hours late. Delays are typically significantly shorter on the Pacific Surfliner due to the shorter distances involved. YMMV vary a bit depending upon the time of day.
I took it last week and saw several solo female travelers. They all seem to have a safe train ride. I've taken lots of trains all over California including the surfliner as a solo female and had zero issues. Intercity rail in the US is very safe, and the Pacific Surfliner I’d say especially so from my experience.
If you want to ride again, try a trip to San Diego or Santa Barbara - the coastal views are incredible, and both stations are in great areas. Additionally, the Santa Barbara-San Luis Obispo segment is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest stretches of rail in the world, though it is a pretty long trip from the LA area. 7.

The first leg was on July 31st on the Pacific Surfliner from Oceanside (in coach) with a transfer to the Coast Starlight in LA (also coach), arriving in Emeryville that night and staying in a hotel. The next day, Aug 1st, we were to depart on the California Zephyr from Emeryville for Chicago (in a family bedroom), arriving two days later.
