Grauman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, [ 1] the son of David Grauman (1851–1921) and Rosa Goldsmith (1853–1936). [ 2] Grauman's parents were theatrical performers on show circuits. [ 3] They were both Jewish . Grauman and his father went to Dawson City, Yukon, for the Gold Rush when he was a young man. He worked there as a paperboy.
