In 1975, the department was elevated to the Makerere Institute of Public Health and moved to a new five-storey building of its own. The institute was elevated to a full-fledged School of Public Health and made a constituent school of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences in 2007. [2]

Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), is one of the 10 colleges that constitute Makerere University, East Africa,s oldest university. The college was established in 2007 by consolidating the training offered by the University in the disciplines of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, Optometry, Radiography and other health sciences.
The university incorporated the Uganda Health Management Institute (UHMI), and the International Hospital School of Nursing (IHSON) as the two founding faculties of the university. In December 2010, the university marked its maiden graduation ceremony, held at the university campus at Namuwongo , a suburb of Kampala . [ 5 ]
The school is licensed to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Human Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing. KIU School of Health Sciences is recognised by the medical and dental licensing boards in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. [1] Faculty are sourced from Uganda, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and the Philippines.
The school's campus is located on Mulago Hill, in north-east Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The location is close to the other schools of the College of Health Sciences and is adjacent to the Mulago Hospital Complex, the teaching hospital of MakCHS.
