Steam Deck Recovery Instructions. Download the recovery image here (click) . Prepare a USB key (32GB minimum) with the recovery image: On Windows we recommend using the Rufus utility. I have an IODD 2531. I like your out-of-the-box idea of writing the Steam Deck Recovery Image to the device and making a separate partition to store other bootable images in. But for me, that kinda defeats the purpose of the device if I write a recovery image to it and do that workaround to make everything else work again.

Just had the same problem with recovery image not loading after new ssd install. My tips: don't forget to unpack the .img file, and then use Rufus to load it on usb stick If the steam deck doesn't load the image in 20-30 minutes, just try another usb stick. I even tried another 1 from same brand and type, and it suddenly worked.
Valve provided the image compressed with bz2, so you'll need to extract it first. The command bzcat steamdeck-recovery-1.img.bz2 > steamdeck-recovery-1.img should work if you're on Linux. Ifyou're on !Pop_OS just double click thw .bz2 file and select extract. Then use the pre-installed USB flasher tool.
However, after using 7 different USB-drives, 2 SD-cards, 2 differents OS and 1 USB-hub I wasn't able to start up the recovery-Image which I also redownloaded several times on 2 PCs and 1 laptop (ubuntu) with 2 different USB-creating tools (rufus and etcher).
For me the whole process: Boot recovery USB, recover, restart, update, restart and boot in SteamDeck mode took around 25 minutes. My USB drive model is Lexar C20m. 1. Reply. Chestbreaker. • 2 yr. ago. Get a USB 3.0 drive, I had the issue with my 2.0, solved it getting a 3.1 for like 9 bucks.
Has anyone gotten this to work on the Ventoy usb tool. When I extract the bz2 steam recovery image to the .IMG. ventoy doesn't boot it. I want to add the recovery image with my windows and other OS's on my flash drive. It doesn't work. There is an issue for it on the ventoy GitHub, but I haven't seen a reply.
It is; if you look at the file name of the image (once downloading) it's steamdeck-repair-20231127.10-3.5.7.img.bz2. Dated post-OLED release and versioned 3.5.7 (which looks to be the current stable?) where support came in 3.5 generally means you should be perfectly fine. DHyperOnYT.
Use the touch controls to open the Bluetooth interface on the deck (bottom right near the clock) and discover your phone. Then simply use the app on your phone to type. I had to wipe my sudo password which requires keyboard inputs and this method worked a charm. Hope this helps someone!
