The Water Structures program helps protect neighboring landowners from construction activities, within a floodplain, by administrating the Obstructions in Stream Act and the Levee Law. This program also assists communities in the mapping and flood insurance protection processes.
The law is administered by the Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Water Resources, which issues permits to appropriate water, regulates usage, and keeps records of all water rights in the state.
The Stafford Field Office is responsible for monitoring and regulating the use of surface water and groundwater in all or parts of 26 counties in South Central Kansas. The area is very diverse. Water is obtained from both groundwater and surface water.
