Phi Alpha Theta (ΦΑΘ) is an American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. The society has over 400,000 members, with some 9,000 new members joining each year through 970 chapters nationwide.

Phi Alpha Theta bestows lifetime membership to all students who join the honor society. There are no annual dues; however, we encourage our members to subscribe to The Historian, which is published electronically, to remain in active status.
Phi Alpha Theta *electronically* publishes The Historian, a distinguished quarterly journal discussing interests in all fields of History. The Historian is highly regarded for its extensive Book Review Section.

Phi Alpha Theta encourages student members to apply for one of three (3) graduate scholarships (applicants will be considered for all three). To be eligible, members must be entering graduate school for the first time in fall 2025 and must be pursuing a Master’s degree in History or Library Science-Archives.
