The main building features animals living in several exhibits that depict the many environments of Virginia, including the coastal plain, a 30,000 US gallons (110,000 L) Chesapeake Bay exhibit, the Piedmont, an Appalachian Mountain cove, a cypress swamp, and underground, as well as a gallery of nocturnal life.
The museum was founded in 1930 by Archer Milton Huntington, son of Collis P. Huntington, a railroad builder who brought the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway to Warwick County, Virginia, and who founded the City of Newport News, its coal export facilities, and Newport News Shipbuilding in the late 19th century.
