For the record the walmart.com (US site) actually have two different policies about gift cards. On this page it actually said If your Walmart Gift Card is lost or stolen, immediately call customer service at 1-800-411-7942. Your Walmart Gift Card will be cancelled and we will issue a new one with the remaining balance.

Be careful and WATCH the cashier like a hawk to make sure everything is scanned! I always check after I pay, before I leave, but apparently that wasn't enough!

Yeah, the exact same thing happened to me for the subway gift card. I had to call in and they wanted the screenshot of the flyer page that had the promotion and a picture of the receipt containing the purchase of the gift card, the whole process took 2 weeks before it was finally resolved.
